Cardiovascular Disease - The World's Number One Killer

Affecting 150 million people worldwide, cardiovascular disease is a collective term used to describe the variety of conditions that can affect the heart and circulatory system such as high blood pressure (hypertension), coronary heart disease, heart attack (myocardial infarction), angina, and stroke.

It is the single greatest cause of death and illness in the Western world, and is estimated to account for over $300 billion every year in hospitalization, treatment and loss of productivity costs.

The most common risk factors for cardiovascular disease include smoking, physical inactivity, poor diet, obesity and diabetes. Other risks for cardiovascular disease include family history, gender and age.
