Program Description

The workshop was held over a one-and-a-half-day period. The course began on Friday, April 8, 2005 at 11:00 AM with an optional Primer on Genomics, followed by a buffet luncheon. The official program began at 1:00 PM and concluded at 6:45 PM. A reception and dinner followed. An outstanding dinner speaker was selected to provide additional insights into genomics and cardiovascular disease. The program continued on Saturday, April 9 at 8:00 AM, adjourning at 1:00 PM.

The workshop was divided into 4 main sessions, as noted on the agenda. Each session included a world-class panel that addressed the molecular biology of the heart, molecular genetics of common cardiovascular diseases, molecular basis of atherosclerosis, and treatment and pharmacogenomics of cardiovascular disease. Interactive discussion segments concluded each session.

The workshop and all related meal functions were supported by an educational grant from the Foundation.

Objective

At the conclusion of this workshop, the attendee should be able to:
  • Understand the basics of genomics
  • Comprehend the fundamental issues of genomic medicine and examine how to utilize its components to better understand and treat cardiovascular disease
  • Describe the contribution of genomics and genetics to the molecular biology of the heart, congenital heart disease, and inherited cardiovascular disease
  • Identify the role that genomics plays in common cardiovascular diseases, including coronary artery disease, the metabolic syndrome, hypertension, and alterations in lipid levels
  • Gain insight into the molecular basis of atherosclerosis
  • Understand applications of genomics to the long QT syndrome, heart failure, and antihypertensive therapy.
