The International Competitive Grants Award Program for Young Investigators is a 2-year international program enabling
young investigators who have completed medical school within the past 10 years to obtain funding for innovative research in cardiovascular disease.
The 2008 application deadline has passed. Information about the 2009 application will be posted soon. Please check back.
Young Investigators are defined as individuals who have graduated medical school within the past 10 years and are either currently enrolled in
the later years of a cardiology fellowship program (2nd year or later), are junior faculty members, or physicians who have completed a cardiology training program
within the past 3 years.
Eligible candidates are required to submit a 2-year research plan on basic science or clinical research in cardiovascular disease according to criteria outlined
herein. Research proposals must be reviewed and signed by the applicant’s research advisor and must be accompanied by a 1-page letter of recommendation, which
outlines the career path and commitment of the Young Investigator.
A total of 6 grants are awarded annually. Each grant is $55,000 per year for 2 years. The grant should be used for salary support, unless salary
is already covered, in which case the grant may be applied to other research costs. A stipulation for this grant is that the recipient’s institution may not
sequester more than 10% for indirect costs. Because research proposals must be sustainable for a minimum of 2 years, it is imperative that applicants maintain
the ability to fulfill their research commitment in accordance with the requirements and expectations set forth by the Foundation. To continue to receive the
grant annually, progress reports will be required at 10 months and 22 months from the date of the grant issuance. If progress is not deemed sufficient, the grant
may be discontinued. A complete report will be required at the conclusion of the grant period. Grant recipients who publish their research
during or following the completion of the grant are required to make proper acknowledgments to the GlaxoSmithKline Research & Education Foundation for
Cardiovascular Disease.

This program is made possible through an unrestricted educational grant provided by the GlaxoSmithKline Research & Educational Foundation for Cardiovascular
Disease. The Foundation has been established to promote and develop a new generation of cardiovascular clinician scientists by:
- Supporting education on cutting-edge future topics,
- Supporting innovative research programs,
- Creating opportunities for international exchange of ideas, and
- Vision to provide the most accessible portal for young researchers seeking links to potential sources of funding for their further study and future research
in cardiovascular disease.
As such, the grants are designed to promote the development of independent research and foster the development of leadership in new scientists.
